Burlington’s police chief announced his resignation on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Marc Denney did not give the city a reason for his resignation, which takes effect immediately. He became Burlington’s chief in February, 2021.

City Manager Chad Bird said for the time being, he will not appoint an interim police chief.

“In the immediate short term, it’ll be status quo without interruption in service, as if the chief were simply on vacation or using some other personal leave or something else like that,” he said.

Bird said he will talk to the city council, police department staff, and citizens about the department’s future and the qualities they would like to see in a police chief.

He said the search for a chief will be a deliberate and thorough process.
