Jazz Night returning to Western Illinois Museum

The Jazz Night concert series is a collaboration between the Western Illinois University School of Music and the Western Illinois Museum, where the concerts will be held.

“The museum is such an interesting space. I don’t think I’ve ever played a gig where I’m right next to a plow from 1880,” said pianist Whitney Ashe of the School of Music.

“It’s a great atmosphere. It’s one of my favorite places to play in the region.”

Four concerts are scheduled:

  • Friday, October 13 – tenor saxophonist Chip McNeill
  • Friday, November 10 – saxophonist Jon Irabagon
  • Friday, March 1 – trombonist Mike Fahn
  • Friday, April 5 – saxophonist Dr. Damani Phillips

“It’s a great opportunity to hear artists of this caliber. All of the people that we’re bringing in are world class jazz performers with incredible resumes,” Ashe said.
The guest musicians will be backed by the HAT Trio – Matt Hughes on bass, Ashe on the piano, and George Turner on guitar.

The doors and the bar will open at 4:30 p.m. for each concert, with the music beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Admission is a five-dollar suggested donation at the door.

Student groups from WIU will perform after the main act to make for a full evening of music.
