McDonough County sheriff’s deputy fires shots during altercation
Investigators with the Illinois State Police said a McDonough County sheriff’s deputy fired multiple shots at a man who was wielding an ax.

Neither the deputy nor the suspect was injured.

The sheriff’s department was called to the 500 block of North Washington Street in Bushnell on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 19, on a report of domestic battery.

The suspect fled after the shots were fired but was later apprehended.

Illinois State Police said the investigation is active and ongoing, and no additional information will be released at this time.

New vice chair for WIU board
Western Illinois University’s Board of Trustees has a new vice chairperson.

Board members voted unanimously to appoint Polly Radosh to the position.

Radosh replaces Greg Aguilar, who resigned from the board last month. The university has not said why Aguilar resigned.

Trial delayed for man charged in death of deputy
The murder trial for a Granite City man charged in the death of a Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy has been postponed.

Daylon Richardson, 24, pleaded guilty in Henry County court to aggravated fleeing, improper lane usage, and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

But the murder case will not be heard until early next year.

Deputy Nicholas Weist, 34, died last year near Alpha after being struck by Richardson’s car during a chase that started in Galesburg.

Redesigning the approach to the bridge that connects Hamilton and Keokuk
Illinois is making plans to redesign the U.S. Route 136 approach to the Mississippi River bridge at Hamilton.

There has been major flooding at that location several times in the past three decades, cutting off access to the bridge.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on its plans on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 4-6 p.m. at the Hamilton Community Center, 1680 Keokuk St.

The department will seek input on its preferred alternative design and two additional alternatives.

IDOT said the improvements are getting a jump-start through funding from the Rebuild Illinois program.
