Denniston sentenced to 45 years in Galesburg arson

A Galesburg man convicted of murder earlier this year has been sentenced to 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Donald Denniston, 41, was found guilty in August of first degree murder and aggravated arson in the February 2021 death of Katrina Hainline, 50.

Denniston set fire to a home in the 200 block of Pine Street, where Hainline was found dead.

At a sentencing hearing this week, Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin asked for a 55-year sentence, saying the defendant has a history of criminal activity and his actions caused serious harm.

Denniston was also convicted of arson in Knox County in 2015 and was sentenced to four years in the Department of Corrections, and has a total of five previous felony convictions.
