Spoon River College expects to begin construction of its new Macomb campus this year.

The college is renovating a former retail building on East Jackson Street.

President Curt Oldfield said the project should go out for bid in the spring and construction should begin in the summer.

“I’m real excited to get that process started,” he said.

The estimated price tag is $16.5 million.

“We’ve been trimming expenses to stay within the estimated budget. So hopefully those bids will come in competitive and we’ll be able to reach those goals,” Oldfield said.

$6.5 million of the funding for the project is from a Rebuild Illinois grant. The college issued bonds to cover the rest of the cost.

Most of the work will be done indoors, which will allow the project to move along quickly once construction begins.

If all goes as planned, SRC will begin moving into the new campus in July 2025.

“We will have about six weeks to make that move from our current campus on Johnson St. before school starts,” Oldfield said.

The new campus will allow SRC to expand its career, tech, and nursing programs in Macomb.
