Georgetown homeowners and Macomb city council members have approved the annexation of the subdivision into the city.

The city of Macomb is growing a bit larger. The city council agreed to annex the Georgetown subdivision just west of city limits.

The council took the action after Georgetown homeowners approved the annexation agreement, which should go into effect by mid-April.

The subdivision includes around 200 townhomes.

The city estimates the addition of Georgetown will increase its population by around 500.

Mayor Mike Inman said that will boost Macomb’s local tax base, and will also mean an increase in shared revenue from the federal and state governments.

“At $140 to $150 per person per year in additional shared federal and state revenue, we think that’s important. It’s important for the long-term viability of the city,” he said.

The addition of the subdivision will also benefit Macomb when the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a special census in the city, possibly later this year. City leaders believe the population was undercounted during the 2020 census, and asked for and were granted the special census.

The federal government uses census figures to determine funding for hundreds of programs, such as school lunches and infrastructure.

The mayor said Georgetown residents will benefit from getting the city’s police and fire service. Plus, the city will maintain infrastructure that had been the responsibility of the subdivision’s homeowner’s association.
