Monmouth, IL – Monmouth believes an infrastructure improvement is about more than meeting state standards - it could also mean job creation. The project is construction of a new wastewater treatment plant. The current facility was built in the 1920s. It's on a flood plain and is deteriorating. Mayor Rod Davies says the city's residents will benefit from the new plant and he says it will also help Farmland Foods. The project will allow the company to proceed with its plans to expand the Monmouth plant, which currently employs 1,250 people. The expansion could allow it to hire another 250. The overall cost of the new wastewater treatment facility is an estimated $15 million. Farmland could contribute $2 million for converting the town's north wastewater plant to a pre-treatment facility. The new plant will be built next to it. In addition, the federal government has announced it will provide $400,000 for the work.
