Macomb, IL – The Macomb Planning Commission voted 10-0 against rezoning the property at 1409 West Adams Street, yet city council members are not convinced that was the best decision. The owners of the 4.5 acre site say their home is surrounded by apartments, so it makes sense to rezone their land from R-1 for single family homes to R-4 for multi-family use as they try to sell it. Neighborhood residents argued against the change and the planning commission then rejected the rezoning. But city council members wonder if planning commission members got caught up in the emotion of the matter rather than judging the case on its facts. Like the property owners, they say the site is surrounded by R-4 zoning. Aldermen will discuss the issue during their August 14 committee meeting. They could choose to send the matter back to the planning commission or they could put the item on the August 21 city council agenda for a vote.
