Macomb, IL – A couple of rezoning requests have received a lot of attention in Macomb recently. Both were to be voted on Monday night but in the end one of them was tabled. Aldermen agreed to delay a decision that would effect the proposed student housing complex for South Ward and Piper Streets because developer Art McManus was unable to attend the meeting. Mayor Mick Wisslead thinks it was fair to give McManus a chance to be present but says the matter will definitely come up for a vote on September 5.
The other issue concerned the property at 1409 West Adams, which the owners want rezoned for multi-family use. They say all surrounding properties are zoned for multi-family use so the change would make it easier for them to sell the site. But Second Ward Alderman Ken Zahnle argued neighboring areas are still zoned for single family homes. He said changing the zoning would open the door to losing the neighborhood. The rezoning failed to win approval, even though aldermen voted 4-3 in favor of it. Five votes were needed to override the planning commission, which voted 10-0 against the rezoning.
