Macomb, IL – McDonough County's sheriff is asking for a 26 percent budget increase for the fiscal year that begins Dec. 1. That would be an increase of $336,000 over this year's budget. This comes after the county board asked officeholders to submit a level budget request. Sheriff Mike Johnson wants two new deputies, along with one jailer and one clerk. He says the increased staffing would trim the amount of overtime that he has been paying. He says part of the increase will cover higher costs for gasoline and supplies. Johnson says his office is having to respond to calls the state police are not able to cover, as well as an increase in fraud and other computer crimes that keep a deputy in the office instead of patrolling.
