Macomb, IL – A student housing complex will not be built at Ward and Piper Streets in Macomb. Developer Art McManus wanted to build housing for 500 people on the 35-acre site. But he has withdrawn his request to have the land rezoned and is dropping his development plan. Those who live near the site vociferously opposed the project. Fourth Ward Alderman John Maguire says the situation showed him that the city needs to move forward more quickly on developing a comprehensive plan so that zoning issues can be looked at outside of the emotions of the issue at hand. Mayor Mick Wisslead says now that McManus has withdrawn his plans, two other developers are poised to make a move. He says they also want to build large student housing complexes.
