Lee County Makes Small Contribution To Multi-Million Dollar Project

Montrose, IA – Supporters say it will cost about $3.4-million to build a sports complex on Fort Madison's west side.

It would feature three soccer/football fields and three baseball/softball fields.

Pledges of support have picked up in recent weeks.

Pinnacle - $175,000
Fort Madison - $500,000 (over two years)
Fort Madison SIRRC - $1.2-million.

The group working on the sports complex plans to apply for a $900,000 tourism grant through the state.

It says that application requires financial support from the city and the county.

The city pledged its support about two weeks ago.

The Lee County Board of Supervisors has agreed to contribute all of its hotel-motel tax revenue over the next three years.

The tax has generated just under $660 for the county during the last three full fiscal years.

The supervisors hope the county's new rental cabins will increase that over the next three years.

Supervisor Larry Kruse says the county cannot open the flood gates when it comes to funding request for other projects.

He hopes the fact that the contribution of 100% of the hotel/motel tax money shows more of a commitment than the actual dollar figure.

The grant application is due next month. It is unclear how the county's contribution will impact it.

Kruse, Supervisor Gary Folluo and Vice-Chairwoman Janet Fife-LaFrenz supported the measure.

Chairman Ernie Schiller and Supervisor Rick Larkin both felt more money should be contributed.
