Security Increased at KHS

The Keokuk School District is increasing security at its high school, based on a possible online threat.

Principal Larry Frakes said several students told a teacher on Monday, Dec. 17 that they had seen a Facebook post about someone planning to attack the school on Friday, Dec. 21.

He said the school district contacted the Keokuk Police Department and interviewed the students who came forward, but no threats against the high school or the district were located online or in writing.

Frakes said parents started calling in yesterday to find out about the situation, prompting the district to initiate an automated alert call and limit access to the high school.

“We are locking all (exterior) doors except for one entrance right near the office here,” said Frakes.  “We are asking kids to be cautious and to stay in the classrooms and out of the halls.  Just as a precaution, we are going to have extra security here on Friday morning just as a precautionary measure.”

Frakes says the exterior doors will remain locked through the end of the week.

He says students will maintain a regular schedule.
