Jim Avett, Father of The Avett Brothers, to Perform in Cambridge July 18

Jim Avett, Father of The Avett Brothers, to Perform in Cambridge July 18

Singer-songwriter and storyteller Jim Avett, father of Scott and Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers, will perform at Ca d’Zan House Concerts in Cambridge on Saturday, July 18. Presented by Crossroads Cultural Connections, the all-ages concert will begin at 7 p.m., following an optional community potluck dinner at 6 p.m.

Born in central North Carolina in 1947, Avett grew up surrounded by music, family stories, and a colorful community of enthusiastic storytellers. Encouraged by parents, relatives and neighbors who valued creativity, he began playing instruments and writing stories at an early age—interests that have continued throughout his life.

Avett’s path has included college studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of Northern Colorado, four years of service in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1971, and technical training that led to a 40-year career in the construction industry. Along the way, music remained a constant presence.

While working to support his wife, Susan, and their three children—Bonnie, Scott and Seth—Avett continued playing in informal bands and collecting the stories and observations that would later become songs. His music is especially rooted in the ballad tradition, using songs to preserve memories, share lessons, and reflect upon the people and experiences that shape a life.

Now living on a farm in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, Avett brings audiences an intimate performance filled with original songs, traditional influences, personal stories, and the warm, unvarnished perspective of a lifelong musician and storyteller.

Guests are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. for the optional potluck dinner and may bring a dish to share. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. A donation of $20 to $30 is suggested, and music lovers of all ages are welcome.

Presented by Crossroads Cultural Connections, this concert continues the organization’s mission of bringing meaningful, high-quality live music experiences to Henry County and surrounding communities.
