Carl Reinecke’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra is lyrical, featuring our principal flutist Paul Mizzi.

Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 is lofty, one of the most prominent pieces of late 19^th-century European art music by one of the genre’s most prominent composers.

Western Illinois University Theatre and Dance has announced its Fall 2026 season, featuring a lineup of classic theatre, contemporary musical theatre, original dance works, and a showcase highlighting the talents of WIU students and faculty. The Fall 2026 season will take place in the new Goldfarb Center for Performing Arts, with performances in the Clow Theatre and Hainline Theatre, in Brown Hall.

STAND/RESIST is a devised dance work that uses powerful movement and stillness to embody iconic protests throughout history. Through ensemble physicality, the piece explores courage, unity, and the human impulse to stand up and rise together for change.

Enjoy a creative midday break surrounded by art, conversation, and community. This monthly event offers an inspiring presentation or featured artist alongside the option to enjoy a delicious lunch in the gallery.

The Mount Sterling Farmers Market began in 2017 as a grassroots effort led by community members with the goal of promoting local food access, small businesses, and community gathering, laying the foundation for the market we know today.

The Friends of Argyle Lake State Park will be hosting ‘Arts in Nature’ painting classes at Argyle Lake State Park at the park’s visitor center shelter. The November class will be held at the maintenance building unless it’s nice outside. West Prairie Elementary School art instructor, Jennifer Cordell, will share her passion for painting while instructing participants in creating a nature painting. The program fee is $20, as all materials and supplies will be provided. Locally handcrafted Amish oak frames will be available for $20 if you'd like to frame your one- of-a-kind masterpiece afterwards.

The Burr Oak String Band offers up a crowd-pleasing mix of lively instrumentals and heartfelt harmonies. Masters of a variety of instruments and styles – old-time, raggy blues, bluegrass, folk – they appeal to a range of musical sensibilities and can perform in a variety of settings, including concerts, festivals, and dances. In different combinations, the members of Burr Oak played together in several old-time or bluegrass bands before we decided to play together in the spring of 2015.

To open our season, we will perform the deeply moving contemporary work, which portrays the story of Matthew Shepard, the 21-year-old gay man who was brutally murdered in 1998, an event that shocked and moved people around the world and left them asking how something like this could have happened.

Considering Matthew Shepard invites us to explore this question from a perspective of shared humanity and ultimately of hope. The individual movements of this piece tell Matthew’s story from multiple and surprising perspectives, ranging from a tear trailing down his cheek to the Wyoming fence upon which he was left to die.

Featuring a wide variety of musical styles from Country to Classical and Musical Theatre to the Blues, we anticipate this piece will intrigue audiences on many different levels.
