The Western Illinois University College of Fine Arts and Communication and the WIU Department of Theatre and Dance will present SummerStage 2025 performances of “Matilda the Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 11 and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12 in the Hainline Theatre on the WIU campus.
“Matilda The Musical,” the multi-award-winning production inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved 1988 novel Matilda, comes to life under the direction of Meagan Morrow, a WIU Master of Fine Arts in Directing alumna. Musical direction is led by Ethan Ivey, WIU Choral Conducting alumnus and choir director at Macomb Junior High School. The show’s choreography is done by Donald Laney, WIU’s head of dance.
The story follows Matilda, an extraordinary little girl with remarkable wit, intelligence, and psychokinetic powers. Determined to take control of her own fate, she bravely stands up to the cruelty and neglect of her parents. Matilda finds comfort and encouragement in her growing bond with the kind and compassionate Miss Honey, a teacher who quickly recognizes the girl's unique gifts. Yet, school life is far from easy. The tyrannical headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, despises children and delights in punishing anyone who defies her harsh rules. With courage and cleverness on her side, Matilda just might become the beacon of hope her fellow students need.
Tickets are now on sale. Prices are $25 for general admission and $20 for seniors and students.
