Alderwoman Sandy Pollitt says she is seeking re-election to the Keokuk City Council so she can continue working to improve the city.
She has represented the 5th ward on the panel for nearly 2 ½ years.
Pollitt says she has learned a lot during that time, adding that she has the time and energy to devote to the position, both within city hall and out in the community.
“It takes more than just going to a meeting,” says Pollitt. “It takes a lot of time outside of the meetings we have. Getting acquainted with what is going on, the problems, the solutions. It takes a lot more time than you would think.”
Pollitt says the biggest challenges facing the city are the loss of jobs and the maintenance of local streets and sidewalks.
She says the city must play a role by making incentives or other programs available.
She says she supports the hiring of a police officer to fill a potential vacancy and opposes the replacing of other employees through privatization.
“It seems to me that you get better service from people who are there and are part of the community and have the job that don’t just travel around and do that job in several different places.”
Pollitt says she favors Keokuk continuing to use a full-time mayor as opposed to hiring a city manager or administrator.
She also supports requiring insurance on vacant, downtown buildings.
