Former WIU Student Sentenced for Cheating Amtrak

A federal judge sentenced a former Western Illinois University student to 18 months in prison for one count of wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors said Ryan Minter, 24, of Calumet City used stolen credit card information to buy Amtrak tickets online and then sold them to WIU students for travel between Macomb and Chicago.

Prosecutors said the scheme began in 2016 and continued for two years.

Minter’s federal sentence includes paying restitution of $15,900.

The judge also ordered him to serve the sentence after whatever sentence he might receive in Cook County, where he's charged with felony possession of a firearm.
