Plea Deal in Fatal Crash

Illinois State Police
The crash scene

An Iowa man agreed to a plea deal in connection with a fatal traffic crash that happened north of Macomb nearly two years ago.

Gregory T. Jones, 30, of Nevada, IA, pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, two years of probation, and 200 hours of community service. He was also fined.

The crash happened on May 22, 2019 in the northbound lanes of Route 67.

Illinois State Police said Jones was driving a box truck that hit a slow-moving farm tractor from behind.

The driver of the tractor, Timothy Sullivan, 64, of Macomb, was thrown from the vehicle. Sullivan was taken to McDonough District Hospital in Macomb and later to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he was pronounced dead.

Jones’ truck left the road and ended up in the grassy median. He was not injured.

The crash backed up traffic for several hours.
