The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported at least 67 journalists and media workers were killed in 2022. The group said it was a 50% increase from 2021.
CPJ confirmed at least 41 of those deaths were work-related. It is investigating the other cases.
The most dangerous locations for journalists were Ukraine, Mexico, and Haiti. CPJ called Mexico a country where the killers of journalists get away with murder.
One reporter in the U.S. was killed for doing his job. In September, Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German was fatally stabbed by a local official who had lost a reelection bid after German’s reporting about alleged mismanagement in his office. CPJ said local reporters covering politics, crime, and corruption are frequent targets.
