Chicago Public Media might acquire one of the city's newspapers

Chicago Public Media, which oversees public radio station WBEZ, is in talks to acquire the Chicago Sun-Times.

WBEZ reported the deal won initial support from Chicago Public Media’s board of directors last week. WBEZ said if the deal is finalized, the Sun-Times would be become a subsidiary of Chicago Public Media.

The Sun-Times, like many newspapers, has struggled financially, though its CEO told WBEZ that the paper is on more stable financial ground now. The Chicago Public Media plan counts on commitments from three major funders and an increase in subscriptions.

Many other details are still being worked out.
