Medical Marijuana


Like many small business owners, Amy Manganelli has taken a financial hit since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. So, a few weeks ago, she decided to apply for a small business loan from the federal government.


Adults in Illinois will be able to legally buy and use marijuana for non-medical purposes beginning January 1, 2020.  At that same time, communities will be allowed to charge a local option sales tax of up to 3% on marijuana products.

The O'Hern family in west central Illinois has long been involved in traditional farming. They grow corn, soybeans, and wheat, plus they raise cattle. In the last few years they have added another crop to their repertoire: medical marijuana.

The push to legalize recreational marijuana in Illinois could get a jump-start early next year. State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) said she plans to introduce legislation early next year to tax and regulate the use and sale of marijuana.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed a measure on Tuesday that will allow medical cannabis to be used as an alternative treatment for conditions often treated with opioids, such as cancer, HIV, Alzheimer’s and more.
