The decomposing remains of Richard Young were found in the storage unit on Oct. 7, 2022, after a report of a suspicious odor.

An elderly Maquon woman charged with murder in the death of the village’s former police chief waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

Karen J. Doubet, 78, appeared in Knox County court on Monday afternoon with her public defender, using a cane to walk to the counsel table.

Doubet and Marcy L. Oglesby, 53, are accused of putting eye drops in Young’s drink and food to poison him, then hiding his dead body in a storage unit across the street from the Maquon house where they lived.

His remains were discovered in October 2022.

Both women are charged with murder, concealment of a homicidal death, and aggravated battery with a toxic substance.

Oglesby was initially charged with concealment of a death in 2022. Amended charges were filed in February 2023. Though the circuit court dismissed the amended charges over speedy trial concerns — and Oglesby was released from jail — the Appellate Court reinstated the charges.

Doubet was arrested on a warrant last month. Prosecutors did not file a petition to detain her, but mandated a mental health evaluation. Per the conditions of her release, Doubet is to have no contact with Oglesby.

Arraignment in Doubet’s case is set for Dec. 10.

Oglesby is also scheduled to appear in court that day for a status hearing.
