Both Macomb police officers shot while serving a search warrant on Sept. 4 are back on the job, according to Chief Jeff Hamer.
Detective Nick Severs was shot in the hip and Sergeant J.P. McLaughlin was shot in the leg at the house at 309 N. Normal St. They were sent there to investigate an alleged criminal sexual assault.
The shooting led to a nearly 20-hour standoff involving local, state, and federal officers before the suspect, Shaiking Mathis, 38, surrendered.
Mathis is also accused of firing at Macomb Police Lt. Todd Tedrow, but he was not hit.
Mathis faces eight charges, including aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
He has pleaded not guilty and has asked for jury trial. He remains in the McDonough County jail after a judge denied pretrial release.
The house is about a block from the Western Illinois University campus in Macomb. As a safety precaution, the university canceled classes on Sept. 5 because of the ongoing standoff.
Investigators found a 9mm handgun, a .25 caliber handgun, ammunition, and shell casings in the house.
McDonough County State’s Attorney Matt Kwacala said Mathis had two prior felony convictions – one from 2004 in Kenosha, Wis., and the other from 2010 in Cook County.
As a convicted felon, Mathis could not legally own firearms. In addition, he had no FOID card.
