Tornadoes confirmed near Fort Madison and in Monmouth

The National Weather Service office in the Quad Cities said Tuesday night’s storms produced eight tornadoes in its coverage area.

One of those touched down for a brief time outside of Fort Madison, and another moved through portions of Monmouth.

The Lee County tornado was reported southwest of Fort Madison at around 6 p.m. The EF-0 tornado had estimated peak winds of 80 mph. It was on the ground for less than a mile.

The storm derailed at least two dozen double stack train cars near Montrose. It also damaged an irrigator, a garage, and trees.

About 45 minutes later, an EF-1 tornado touched down on the south side of Monmouth. It moved northeast through town. It damaged roofs, trees, sheds, and a garage.

The storm’s estimated peak winds reached 100 mph. It was on the ground for more than a mile.

The NWS received reporting assistance from Lee County Emergency Management and Warren County Emergency Management.

The weather service office in the Quad Cities also reported six tornadoes in Mercer and Rock Island counties. One of them lasted more than nine miles from southwest of Coyne Center into the southern Quad Cities metro area. It caused heavy damage in some areas.

No deaths or injuries are reported from the tornadoes.
