A man killed in an accident involving an Amtrak train Wednesday afternoon in Galesburg has been identified as 32-year-old John Glasgow.

Glasgow, of Little York, was an advocate for rural education through his work with Illinois Association of Rural and Small Schools.

In a joint statement, the AIRSS, Regional Office of Education #26, and the National Rural Education Association said Glasgow’s death is a “devastating loss."

“John was a valued member of our team, and we know this news will be difficult for all of us to process,” the statement says. “As shared in this joint message John’s impact on the rural school community extended beyond a single entity, and his commitment, care and support of rural and small schools were felt globally.”

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with John’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”

The Galesburg Police Department responded at 12:19 p.m. Wednesday to Galesburg’s Amtrak depot in the 200 block of South Seminary Street, following a report of a train-pedestrian collision.

Knox County Coroner Jacque Dare said the collision was determined to be an accident. She said Glasgow was struck by an Amtrak train as it was coming into the station. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
