Last Day for SCC President

College - SCC - President Beverly Simone - 500.jpg

SCC’s outgoing president says what she will remember most about her time in southeast Iowa will be the “little things.”

Dr. Beverly Simone has been involved in community college education for more than 40 years, the last seven of which as SCC’s president.

She says the time has come to step away and spend more time with her friends and family.

She says the college accomplished a great deal during her tenure, including new facilities for its construction and welding programs, new programs like the computer animation program and positive reviews from the state and federal levels.

Simone also touts the passage of a six-cent tax to fund equipment and technology purchases.

She says what’s even more important to her, though, are her interactions with the students.

“When a student has said to me or written a note to me that said, ‘what you’ve done, the fact that you were there, you answered the phone, you gave me some advice that I needed, my life has been changed by coming to the community college,’” says Simone, “those have been probably the most rewarding moments of all.”

Simone also had some rough times at the end of her tenure.

Almost the entire men’s basketball team was dismissed for unknown reasons while SCC’s faculty cast a vote of no confidence against Simone earlier this year.

Simone’s last day on campus will be Tuesday, August 21.  A retirement reception will be held at 4:30 P.M. that afternoon at the Burlington Golf Club.

Simone’s last day with SCC will be three weeks later to use some vacation time.

Dr. Michael Ash will replace her as President of SCC.
