Des Moines County to Auction Properties

Des Moines County is selling some of the properties it acquired after the Flood of 2008.

Eleven lots in Huron Township will be auctioned off at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 19 at the Des Moines County Courthouse in downtown Burlington.

Dan Eberhardt with the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission says these are the properties the county acquired as part of the flood buyout program.

He says there is one lot with a home that could be rehabilitated.

“The other ten properties, the county has put a deed restriction on those properties where there would be no residential building,” says Eberhardt.  “The reason for that is that the county did not want to have to go through this flood buyout process again.”

Eberhardt says this is the final step in the process of getting these properties back on the tax rolls.

He expects the previous owners or the owners of neighboring properties to purchase these lots.

Eberhardt says eight other affected properties in Huron Township will not be on this auction due to the property owners already being compensated for their homes before tearing them down.

He says the proceeds from the auction must be returned to the state.
