More than a dozen security cameras will be added to a newly renovated school in Galesburg.

Steele Elementary School already has four security cameras inside the school. The additional  16 cameras will go on the outside.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance David Black said the cameras were originally intended to be included in the renovation but were cut to save costs.

Black said putting cameras on the exterior of the building makes financial sense.

“If you’re putting 5 or 6 million dollars into a building of taxpayer money you want to protect the taxpayer’s investment,” Black said.

The additional cameras will cost around 38 thousand dollars, though that's far less than the system that was originally planned during construction.

The school board also voted not to sell items such as windows and doors from a house it owns on the site of the Silas Willard school.

Black said the labor costs involved in disassembling the house would not make sense.
