Second Chance for Keokuk Area Hospital?

Keokuk Area Hospital could get a second chance to secure some much-needed money.

Hospital representatives met with two members of the Lee County Board of Supervisors Thursday morning.

The meeting came less than three weeks after the board voted against giving the hospital $100,000 as a local match for even more federal money.

Duane Fitch, who heads the firm hired to manage the hospital, says most hospitals do not qualify for these matching funds, which is why Keokuk must take advantage of them to help pay for day-to-day services.

"To the extent that we qualify for the program and that the program is in existence, we feel a strong responsibility to participate," says Fitch.

Several supervisors were not expecting the hospital to ask for money twice in less than one calendar year.

Fitch hopes this meeting leads to a return trip before the full board next month.
