The final classes ever have been held at the Carl Sandburg College Children’s School.
The School opened in the in 1977 to serve as a clinical site for students majoring in the nanny and child development programs.
The College has since stopped offering those courses due to lack of interest.
Vice President for Student Services Steve Norton said the college was spending upwards of $425,000 a year on the operation.
“It’s a very difficult decision; the children’s school is something we have been proud of at the college for an extremely long time," Norton said. "It’s just a matter that we could not produce the revenue necessary to cover the cost of the operation.”
The Children’s school served about 70 students. It’s lost about $750,000 over the past seven years.
The space will be renovated and used for additional classrooms.
