Drivers Are Encouraged To Watch Out For Students

With school getting underway, drivers are being encouraged to be on the look-out for students.

The Regional Office of Education for McDonough and Hancock Counties said the majority of injuries from a bus accident do not occur inside a bus, but rather from distracted drivers who hit the children after they leave the bus.

That has Regional Superintendent John Meixner trying to promote awareness for drivers to pay attention.

"There are some chances where people usually blow off those stop signs that are extended out," Meixner said. "We just want to make sure people are aware when you see a big yellow bus, take caution."

Because of the rural area of these counties, Meixner said not too many problems have occurred in the past, due to the narrow roads on which the buses travel.

He said the bus drivers purposely take up more space, forcing the cars to stop.

It is illegal to pass a school bus when its lights are flashing.

Meixner said the children are precious commodities, therefore he would like the counties to remain safe for them.
