Macomb Mayor Mike Inman hopes a newly cleared site in the city's downtown area will attract commercial/retail development.
“It’s ready to go,” the mayor said. “It’s one of our highest traffic count intersections in the city, which means it would be ripe for commercial development.”
The site at Calhoun and Campbell streets had housed Ameren’s coal gasification plant.
“This project has been in the works probably close for a decade and it’s nice to see it finally completed,” said Inman. “I think they did an excellent job of getting it done and the site just looks perfect.”
Inman said Ameren still owns the site, which is nearly half a city square block. He said the Macomb Area Economic Development Corporation can help Ameren market the property.
Inman said the utility was required to clear contaminated soil from the site.
“The site is completely ready for redevelopment for just about anything that doesn’t require footings or a foundation much below ten feet,” he said. “The top ten feet of that soil is completely clean and the rest has been remediated to state and federal standards.”
