The Hub Arts & Cultural Centerin Rushville will do something on Friday, March 19, 2021 that it hasn't done in about a year – hold an in-person opening reception for an exhibit.
"It's exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time," said Executive Director Erin Eveland.
"It's exciting because we haven't done one of these in a year. It's nerve-wracking because we haven't done one in a year. And so much has changed in a year."
Eveland said Schuyler County has few active cases of Covid-19 and she said quite a few residents have been vaccinated. Nonetheless, face coverings and social distancing will be required during the reception, and they will limit how many people can be in the gallery at one time.
The Exhibit
The exhibit is called “Beautiful Garbage,” and it will look like nothing more than garbage strewn about the gallery with paint sticks, Styrofoam, and water damaged cardboard. But in fact, they’re all hyper-realistic ceramics made by Illinois-based artist Tim Kowalczyk.
Eveland said, “It looks incredibly realistic. Everything in the exhibit – including the nails in the wall – are ceramics.
“It makes you really stop and look and think about what we use and how much of it we use. But also looking at the beauty in those little things, things that we normally wouldn’t look at.”
The opening reception will take place from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. It will include an artist talk at 5:30 p.m., which will also be livestreamed on The Hub’s Facebook page.
A virtual demonstration and workshop with Kowalczyk will be held Thursday, March 25, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Registration is $10.
“Beautiful Garbage” will remain on display through April 16.
