This is only the second time in ten years that the Illinois Department of Public Health has revoked a hospital’s license.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has revoked Cottage Hospital’s license.

This is only the second time in ten years that IDPH has revoked a hospital’s license, according to spokesperson Melaney Arnold.

Arnold said Cottage did not request a hearing within ten days of receiving a notice of license revocation sent last month, so the license is now being revoked.

The Galesburg hospital suspended operations on Jan. 8, days before it was set to lose Medicare funding due to a number of violations.

The hospital’s staff was also terminated.

But without a license, the hospital would not be able to operate even if Medicare participation was restored and staff was rehired.

The loss of Medicare participation and the license revocation were the results of investigations conducted by IDPH at the hospital in late 2021.

OSF HealthCare intends to purchase real estate, equipment, and other assets from Cottage but does not plan to have inpatient services at the site.

OSF has not commented on how they will use the property.
