Interim Police Chief Jeff Hamer speaks at a media briefing Saturday, March 23 at city hall following a shooting that killed one person and wounded ten others.

Ten people were wounded in a shooting early Saturday in Macomb that left one person dead and put McDonough District Hospital on lockdown.

Six of those wounded were Western Illinois University students.

Police responded to a house party in the 500 block of North Johnson Street around 1:55 a.m. Saturday after a report of shots fired.

Interim Police Chief Jeff Hamer said at a media briefing Saturday afternoon one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Authorities are not releasing the name of the deceased pending family notification,” Hamer said.

The person who died was not a WIU student, Hamer said.

The remaining victims were all taken to McDonough District Hospital, many with superficial gunshot wounds.

The hospital was placed on lockdown.

“It was for precautionary measures. With the influx of witnesses and injured parties, we had to make the scene safe. But all wounded were treated with prompt and urgent care,” Hamer said.

Some victims were triaged at MDH then transferred to level one trauma centers in the area by ambulance.

Police have not named a suspect.

Hamer said no further information is being released at this time as the investigation continues.

He said the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.

Authorities believe photos and videos of the incident exist. They are asking people to send those to citizenconcerns@macombpolice.com.

In a statement to the campus community, WIU President Guiyou Huang said he was "heartbroken, shocked, and saddened to learn of the senseless act of gun violence."

He reiterated that the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident.

Western Illinois University Athletics events will be canceled for the weekend; most other University events will continue as scheduled.

Individuals with information should call 9-1-1 immediately or contact Macomb Area Crimestoppers at (800) 222-TIPS or (309) 836-2222.
