“There was roughly two minutes of multiple 911 calls reporting the domestic (violence), and the event unfolded in a couple seconds,” said Macomb Police Chief Jeff Hamer during a news conference Monday morning.

A child and a man are dead following an officer-involved shooting after police responded to a domestic violence call.

Macomb Police Chief Jeff Hamer said officers were sent to the 900 block of North Charles Street after receiving multiple 911 calls around 10 p.m. Saturday.

“Upon arriving, officers observed blood in the common area of the complex, and heard screams for help coming from inside an apartment,” Hamer said during a Monday morning news conference.

Officers forced their way into the apartment and saw a 36-year old woman bleeding from numerous stab wounds.

They also saw a man armed with a knife.

Hamer said the man refused to comply with multiple commands to drop the weapon.

The man then reached into a room and briefly disappeared from view before returning to view.

An officer, fearing for their safety, fired one shot, killing the man.

“There was roughly two minutes of multiple 911 calls reporting the domestic (violence), and the event unfolded in a couple seconds,” Hamer said.

He then said officers found a dead child at the scene.

Hamer declined to release the names or ages of the people who died. Autopsies are scheduled for Monday.

The woman was taken to McDonough District Hospital. Hamer declined to comment on her condition.

The department placed two officers on administrative leave.

Hamer declined to say whether there was a history of domestic violence at the address.

Illinois State Police are conducting the investigation into the case.
