WIU alum elected president of Illinois Education Association

Members of the state’s largest union have selected a Western Illinois University alumnus to serve as their president.

Illinois Education Association members elected Karl Goeke as president of the union on March 14, according to a release.

Goeke is a former Spanish teacher with degrees from Highland Community College, Western Illinois University, and Illinois State University.

He taught until three years ago, when he was elected IEA’s vice president. He had been serving the remainder of the term of IEA President Al Llorens, who died in September.

“Public schools represent the deep-felt trust of entire communities across the state. For the delegates from those schools to elect me to represent them means I have earned their trust, and I take that very seriously,” Goeke said in the release.
