The groundbreaking for Keokuk's fully accessible playground brought out more than 50 people in April. The K-PLAY Committee wants to see even more people turn out for a public forum Tuesday night. "The more people we have involved, the better the ideas" said the committee's Tyler McGhghy. "More minds that come together make easier work."
Bentley's Playground in Tolmie Park is named after his nephew, Bentley McGhghy, 4, who has cerebral palsy. The K-PLAY Committee said it will soon install a swing set and a music station. Now it would like to know what other equipment the community desires for the playground.
Tyler McGhghy said one item he would like to see included in Phase 2 is a zip-line.
"It will accommodate a special needs child," said McGhghy. "You just basically push them from one pole to the other pole. When the vendor for Phase 1 came down and explained this piece of equipment, everyone was like 'Yes, we want that.' There is no playground in this area that has a zip-line."
Tuesday night's forum begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Keokuk Public Library. It will also help the K-PLAY Committee identify volunteers.
McGhghy said the group is seeking a grant to help pay for Phase 2, and one requirement of the grant is that volunteers help install the equipment.
The grand opening for Bentley's Playground is scheduled for late June.
