The search for a new superintendent for the West Burlington School District appears to be in the final stages. Three finalists for the position are being interviewed this week.

School Board President Andy Crowner said 17 people applied for the post. He said the board narrowed the pool of candidates to six semi-finalists last month.

Crowner said the school board met with each of the semi-finalists during closed door meetings on Saturday. He said following the meetings, the board selected the three finalists, whose names have not been released.

Crowner said the final interviews are taking place this week: June 3-5. He said each finalists will answer questions, behind closed doors, from three panels: school board members, faculty & staff, and select community members.

The school board plans to accept feedback from each group and deliberate after the final interview.

Crowner said if the school board reaches a consensus on the top candidate, contract negotiations would get underway as soon as possible. He said if a consensus is not reached Wednesday night, another special closed door meeting has been scheduled for June 6.

Crowner said the board will hold a public meeting to officially hire the new superintendent once contract talks are complete.

The district is in need of a new leader after former Superintendent Dave Schmitt resigned abruptly several months ago, citing health issues. Former Fort Madison School Superintendent Ken Marang is currently serving as interim superintendent.
