Burlington, IA – The Burlington School Board has agreed to sell Oak Street Middle School to Dr. Michael Hendricks for $10,000.
Hendricks made the offer on behalf of Southeast Iowa Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
The sale is contingent on inspections and a rezoning of the property for light commercial use.
The company plans to operate out of the former school later this year.
Business Manager Chris Van Meter says the next step is for the school district to hold a public auction to get rid of unnecessary furniture and equipment.
Burlington is currently using the building for storage.
Van Meter says the district is still working on a date and time for the auction.
The Burlington School Board was prepared to demolish the roughly 59,000 square foot building if an offer did not come in before the end of October.
Van Meter says about 10 groups and individuals expressed an interest in the property.
She says the only offer came from Southeast Iowa Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
The construction of Aldo Leopold Middle School meant Oak Street Middle School was no longer needed.
The district has already sold the mobile classrooms at the school.
